Product Description
Food hypersensitivity
Food hypersensitivity means that your dog responds excessively or adversely to specific ingredients in its current diet. There are two types of hypersensitivity:
- Allergy (more than 90% of the cases): a reaction caused by (animal) protein, whereby the immune system responds. Once developed, the allergy is usually permanent.
- Intolerance: an immune-related reaction.
The associated symptoms can be identical in both cases, making it difficult to properly diagnose. The complaints are usually skin related (redness, itching) and gastrointestinal symptoms (such as vomiting in dogs or diarrhoea), and therefore very general and not specific. A food sensitivity diagnosis is made based on the results of an elimination diet.
Elimination diet
The aim of an elimination diet is to stop the dog's symptoms of intolerance. This can be done in several ways:
- A diet without animal protein (the most common cause of allergies), such as TROVET Exclusion/NVD. This product uses vegetable protein instead of animal protein.
- A diet with hydrolysed (animal) protein. In this case, proteins are isolated/reduced in such a way that the animal's body does not recognise ingredients as allergens, so adverse reactions may be avoided.
- A diet with so-called "novel" proteins e.g. horse meat, quail, turkey, venison, rabbit or lamb. Since these animals are rarely used in commercial foodstuffs, it is unlikely that the animal has eaten them before and therefore cannot have developed an allergy previously. Trovet has 6 different elimination diets to choose from which can all follow a hypoallergenic diet with the same protein source. If you choose to use TROVET Unique Protein Lamb and it eliminates your dog's food allergies, you can continue to use TROVET Hypoallergenic Lamb (LRD) indefinitely.
Hypoallergenic diet
TROVET Hypoallergenic LRD (Lamb) Dog is hypoallergenic because it contains lamb and rice, a combination which is known to rarely cause hypersensitive reactions. By switching to a hypoallergenic diet food such as TROVET LRD, reactions such as scratching, rubbing and biting are slowly reduced. You can also give your dog responsible snacks using Trovet Hypoallergenic Treats. In addition, TROVET Hypoallergenic LRD (Lamb) Dog contains all of the essential nutrients for your dog in optimal amounts. Please note that not all complaints will immediately diminish or disappear. Skin conditions tend to improve gradually. If symptoms decrease or disappear entirely, a food allergy can be successfully diagnosed.
