This can be caused by insufficient socialization, trauma, multiple negative experiences, or, for example, a poor owner-dog relationship. Sometimes, a medical problem may also play a role. What should you do if you are experiencing issues with your dog’s behavior?
If you have acquired a purebred dog, you can discover many characteristics of your dog by studying the breed. For instance, if you have a hunting breed, the dog’s natural instinct is focused on finding game. Basic obedience is crucial, and training should focus on that. A breed used for herding will require a lot of movement, and if not challenged enough, it can lead to stress, behavior problems, and sometimes even aggressive behavior. Problems can arise when an owner does not consider the dog’s characteristics and basic needs. Besides sufficient physical challenge, a dog also needs a mental challenge! Additionally, consistent training is essential. It is wise to choose a dog that fits into your life rather than selecting one based on certain physical characteristics.
First, it must be ruled out that the behavior is caused by a medical problem. If there is no medical problem, attention can be given to the dog’s behavior (and the owner’s). Through training or behavior therapy, a dog can be taught (or re-taught) desired behavior. Often, support through supplements or sometimes medication is necessary. It is important to intervene as soon as possible with undesirable behavior. The longer the behavioral problem exists, the more challenging it becomes to change the behavior. There are certified behavior therapists or veterinary behaviorists who can be consulted. Initially, a comprehensive assessment of the situation is made through extensive questioning. Then, a treatment plan is developed. Training or therapy should not be underestimated. It requires a lot of time and patience but is definitely worth it! If these situations and behaviors sound familiar, the Adaptil diffuser may offer a solution.
