How does a slip lead work?

A slip lead consists of a loop with a ring and a stopper, as well as a loop that serves as a handle. The loop with the ring and the stopper is placed around the dog’s neck, creating a slip knot. This tightens when pressure is applied, for example when the dog pulls. This encourages the dog to stop the unwanted behaviour. There are slip leads with a single stopper, such as the KONG Rope Slip Leash. When the dog pulls or displays other undesirable behaviour, the loop becomes smaller, causing mild, uncomfortable pressure around the dog’s neck. To prevent this, you can opt for a slip lead with a double stopper, such as the 51 Degrees North Wanderful Slipline. Thanks to the double stopper, the loop around the neck doesn’t become smaller, but the dog can still be easily corrected.

Safety

To prevent injury, it is important to use the slip lead correctly. You should never pull it too tightly, to ensure that the dog can always breathe and move freely. It is also recommended to use slip leads only during training sessions and to use a collar or harness for regular walks.
