Ear mites are very common in cats and especially in kittens. It can cause a lot of itching and black ear wax. But how do you know if your cat has ear mites and how is it treated?
What are ear mites?
Ear mites live in the ears of animals. They eat dander and ear wax, which causes itching. Irritation in the ear canal produces more ear wax, which can cause a bacterial ear infection in cats with ear mites. It’s important not to wait too long with treatment.
How do I know if my cat has ear mites?
Ear mites itch, a lot. Cats will shake their heads an scratch their ears, which can cause wounds and balding around the ears. Head shaking can dislodge pieces of black earwax. Ears often get a bad smell as well.
If your cat often scratches its ears, you should go to your vet for a check-up. Ear mites are not always the cause, it could also be a normal ear infection or allergies. You need to be sure before you start treatment for ear mites.
