How do you recognise a flea bite?

Written by Anne |

A pet with fleas is very annoying, but did you know that you can also be bitten by a flea? In this article, we tell you how to recognise these bites and what you can do about them.

What Does a Flea Bite Look Like?

Recognising flea bites isn’t always easy. They often appear as small, red bumps on the skin with a tiny white spot in the centre and can be very itchy. Fleas prefer warm areas, so flea bites are commonly found on the feet, groin, armpits, or lower legs. Fleas can also “test bite” multiple times to check if the blood is suitable. These test bites may cause a rash around the affected area.

Flea Bites on Dogs

Just like in humans, flea bites on dogs appear as small, red bumps that can be very itchy. Excessive scratching may lead to scabs in affected areas. Be cautious, as this can have unpleasant consequences!

Are There Any Risks Associated with Flea Bites?

Flea bites themselves are not dangerous, although they can be very irritating. However, scratching can break the skin, increasing the risk of infection. Keep an eye on the affected areas, as wounds can become inflamed.

Additionally, some individuals may be allergic to flea bites. In such cases, the skin around the bite may become irritated, sensitive, or develop a rash. If you notice signs of infection or a rash, always contact your GP.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Of course, preventing flea bites is better than treating them. This can be done through proper hygiene and by regularly treating your dog or cat with an anti-flea product. For dogs, you can use the Adimere Flea Collar or Adimere Flea and Tick Treatment for Dogs.

Still suffering from flea bites?

If you suspect the presence of fleas and are experiencing flea bites, you can take the following steps:

  • Cool the affected areas – this can help reduce itching and swelling.
  • Apply a cooling ointment to the bites.
  • Experiencing an allergic reaction or infection? Contact your GP.
  • Treat your environment – most fleas are not on the body but in the surroundings! Treat all pets in the household with an anti-flea product and use an environmental cleaner for your home.

Prefer not to handle it yourself? Contact a pest control company in your area to help you create an effective plan to get rid of these irritating pests!
