Kidney disease
Kidney disease is relatively common in dogs. It is usually seen in older dogs, but younger animals can also suffer from it. This condition is often long-term in nature, as the function of the kidneys increasingly deteriorates. Despite the fact that full recovery is not possible, the problem can be controlled, for a long time, by a good treatment plan put in place by a veterinarian. A special diet is one of the key measures.
Royal Canin Renal Special Dog
As food plays such an important role in the treatment of kidney disease, Royal Canin has developed three diet foods as part of the Renal Line for dogs, to support renal function in chronic kidney disease. The three selections available are Royal Canin Renal Dog, Royal Canin Renal Special Dog and Royal Canin Renal Select Dog. Each have their own flavours to meet the needs of your dog. This helps to stimulate appetite.
Royal Canin Renal Special is suitable for dogs with kidney problems who find ordinary Renal food less appealing. Royal Canin Renal Special food has the same texture as the Royal Canin Renal food, but a different taste and smell. The ingredients of the foods are exactly the same, only the additives are different. For Renal wet food, see Royal Canin Renal Dog.
Recommended for
- Chronic kidney disease.
- The prevention of recurrent kidney or bladder stones, where it is necessary to make urine less acidic (urate stones, cystine stones).
- The prevention of recurrent oxalate stones in dogs with impaired renal function.
Key features:
Chronic kidney disease affects the function of the kidneys. One of the tasks affected is the excretion of phosphorus. Limited phosphorus content in food helps to reduce deterioration of the kidneys. The energy-rich Royal Canin Special helps to maintain body weight and can be given in small portions to protect the stomach. The high-quality protein and a modified protein content can also reduce the workload of the kidneys. In addition, it strengthens immunity and inhibits the effects of ageing. The accumulation of waste products in the body can lead to lesions in the gastrointestinal tract. The combination of zeolite and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) helps to reduce the risk of additional gastrointestinal problems. They form a protective layer in the stomach and intestinal walls, as well as creating balanced intestinal flora.
Advice
This diet should be given for up to 6 months, under regular monitoring by a veterinarian. If there are no problems, the food can be given indefinitely, but always consult with your veterinarian.
