What are omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids?
Omega-3 fatty acids
Omega 3 acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids. The best known omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA is a vegetable omega-3 fatty acid. EPA and DHA are known as fish fatty acids.
ALA is an essential fatty acid, because the body is unable to make it by itself. As a result, your pet can only get this fatty acid through food. Your dog or cat can make EPA and DHA from ALA. However, this only produces a small amount of EPA and DHA. It is more efficient to obtain these fish fatty acids through nutrition or a supplement (for example salmon oil).
Omega-6 fatty acids
Omega 6 acids are also polyunsaturated fatty acids. The best-known omega-6 fatty acid is linoleic acid. This is found in vegetable oils. The body cannot make this itself and therefore it is an essential fatty acid. Other omega-6 fatty acids are arachidonic acid (AA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). AA can be made by the body itself from linoleic acid. AA is also found in eggs, poultry, offal and fish.
What are the health benefits of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids?
Omega-3 fatty acids
Omega-3 fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body and support the immune system. Especially the inflammatory reactions in the skin, kidneys and joints are reduced. In the joints we see that EPA slows the inflammatory reactions that occur in osteoarthritis and also slows down the enzyme responsible for the breakdown of joint cartilage. EPA also has a supporting effect on heart and blood vessels and inhibits the decrease of kidney function in cats with chronic kidney failure. In addition, omega-3 fatty acids can support animals with skin and coat problems and allergies. It is also known that these fatty acids (and especially DHA) have a positive effect on nerve cells and thus contribute to the health of the nervous system, including the brain.
Omega-6 fatty acids
Omega-6 fatty acids have a positive effect on one’ s health. It inhibits the production of cholesterol and strengthens the immune system.
