SANIMED Anti Struvite Dog
SANIMED now also offers a diet food that helps to prevent struvite stones and crystals in dogs: SANIMED Anti Struvite.
What is struvite?
Struvite is the formation of crystals in the bladder, composed primarily of magnesium and ammonium phosphate. When crystals form and group together, they can form kidney stones, which is often painful and can cause problems with urination. There are several different types of bladder stones and crystals, and struvite occurs in both dogs and cats.
Struvite causes irritation in the urinary tract, and can also lead to infections. This can result in blockages in the urethra, particularly in males. If the urethra becomes blocked, your pet cannot urinate and the bladder overfills, which may cause damage. If you suspect that your pet cannot urinate, you should always contact your veterinarian.
Dogs with struvite stones may have the following symptoms:
- Difficulty urinating
- Excessively licking the genitals
- Dripping blood/urine
- Frequently urinating in small quantities
- Pain during urination
- General illness
Treatment:
The SANIMED Anti-Struvite diet food can help dissolve struvite and prevent the formation of new crystals. When your dog has a blocked urethra, it can not urinate. Your veterinarian will treat this as quickly as possible. In cases of struvite stones, bacterial infection is also likely to be present, and your veterinarian may prescribe antibiotics for this. In order to dissolve the remaining struvite crystals and prevent recurrence, a special diet will be required.
