Vital organs
The kidneys, heart and liver (the vital organs) are connected to each other. A dog with heart failure can develop kidney and liver failure over time. Once a vital organ begins to stagnate, the body will adjust itself (overcompensate) to try to maintain normal bodily function. Through this overcompensation other vital organs are overloaded, which can lead to adverse affects. It is therefore very important to restore the balance between the vital organs and keep them healthy.

Key features
- Specific Heart & Kidney Support CKD has unique high levels of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, derived from fish oil. In dogs with heart disease, the EPA may help in preserving the fat-free mass, appetite, a normal heart rate, normal blood pressure and the clotting of platelets. In dogs with renal failure, omega-3-fatty acids may slow the progression of renal failure.
- A limited phosphorus content increases the chances of survival. Too much phosphorus in the blood causes further damage to the kidneys.
- The load on the kidneys is reduced due to the low protein content. A limited protein content leads to a reduced production of waste that needs to be excreted by the kidneys. A lower content of waste products in the blood reduces the sensation of nausea and vomiting.
- A reduced sodium content (salt) ensures that blood pressure remains low. This is essential for kidney, liver and heart patients.
- The reduced protein content in combination with protein that has a high biological value reduces the accumulation of toxic substances in the blood of dogs with renal failure. In dogs with liver failure, it reduces the chance of any hepatic encephalopathy. The high quality protein provides the dog with a sufficient amount of essential amino acids.
- Kidney patients have a decreased appetite. Therefore Specific Heart & Kidney Support has been formulated to be extra tasty.
- The reduced protein content reduces the urinary concentrations of oxalate, urate and cystine. The product provides an alkaline pH in the urine which discourages the formation of (calcium) oxalate, cystine and urate and supports a healthy urinary tract. Potassium citrate was added to keep the calcium dissolved so that crystals cannot form easily.
- With natural antioxidants, such as vitamin C, tocopherol and rosemary extract.
